I’m realizing that as a creative, and most importantly a CREATOR, one of the worst things you can do is consume. It clouds your mind, jumbles up your ideas, and if you consume just a little too much, you won’t know where your ideas start and theirs end. It also cockblocks your creativity.
Let me explain what I mean… I’ve heard it from multiple sources over the years that we should allow ourselves to get bored. In today’s landscape, it is very difficult to allow yourself to be bored because it’s so easy to reach for the main source of all sorts of distractions - our phone. You will never be bored when you have access to the whole world from this little device, and the hits of dopamine make it even more appealing to reach for. But creativity, in all forms, is born from boredom; from letting our mind roam because it has nothing else to do.
Creativity requires brainpower; it demands space to grow, and so you must create that space. You must allow your mind to empty out and make room. You do this by letting yourself be bored. Next time you consume something interesting, I want you to go and write down your thoughts on it. Instead of letting it go and consuming something new, sit on that one thing, elaborate, and allow your mind to create something with it.
